NunatuKavut and Nunacor Partner as Official South Coast Route Sponsor of Cain’s Quest 2016
HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, LABRADOR, February 25, 2016 – The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC), in partnership with its economic development corporation Nunacor, today announced combined funding of $10,000 for sponsorship of the 2016 Cain’s Quest Snowmobile Endurance Race. The race, set to depart Labrador West on March 4, will take 37 teams of two on a 3,500 km journey that encompasses all of Labrador.
This significant contribution gives NCC and Nunacor endorsement from Cain’s Quest as the official south coast sponsor, which covers the portion of the route that travels through the NunatuKavut territory from Cartwright, down the south coast to the straits and back up to the Lake Melville Area.
“Sponsoring Cain’s Quest provides us with a tremendous opportunity to increase the profile of our communities and highlight our culture and traditions,” said Todd Russell, President of the NCC. “We want to ensure that people watching from all over the world will learn about us and who we are as the Inuit of NunatuKavut, the Southern Inuit.”
NunatuKavut sponsored the race in 2014 but this is a first for Nunacor.
“We are proud to sponsor an event that showcases the communities and people we partner with and are ultimately in business for,” said Andy Turnbull, Chief Executive Officer for Nunacor. “We also want to promote the many opportunities that exist in our territory.”
NunatuKavut members will likely be following the 2016 race even more closely this year as six of the racers reside on the south coast and many others have connections to the area.
“I think Indigenous people from all across Labrador are especially drawn to Cain’s Quest,” said President Russell. “We have had to navigate through the unpredictable elements of Labrador’s vast and wild landscape and have learned how to survive off the land for many generations.”
The gruelling route is expected to take up to seven days to complete. Racers will cross the finish line back in Labrador West.
“We wish all racers smooth sledding and safe travels as they make their way back to the finish line,” said Mr. Turnbull.
